Easy Summer Wedding Themes
By Cori S. Meloney

Wedding themes are a fun way to unify the different elements of your wedding, from attire to décor to menu to flowers. Summer is a fun time to plan a theme wedding, and you be as simple or complex as you wish. Here are four fun theme ideas that you’ll find are easy to work into your planning.

English Garden

If you’ve ever been to England – or even seen pictures – you’ll know that the English are proud of their gardens. Colorful, lush, and teeming with birds, English gardens are often painstakingly landscaped and tended. To re-create the look of an English garden, you’ll want flowers everywhere. Don’t worry if there isn’t an English-style garden at your wedding location; use flowers popular in English landscaping such as roses, poppies, lavender, bluebells, ivy, bachelor’s buttons, lily of the valley, and hollyhocks. As the folks at KnotForLife.com note, you can also get the look of an English garden by decorating with topiaries and flower-covered arches. Make the theme feel more Victorian by serving tea and scones and decorating with lots of lace and muted pastels. If you can hold your wedding in the garden of a Victorian-style home, even better!

Fourth of July

You don’t have to marry on the Fourth to celebrate the Fourth at your wedding. Your color scheme, of course, is red, white, and blue. Go for true red and blue for a bright, informal celebration. Choose rustic barn reds and antique blues for a more elegant affair. Accent your décor with flags, stars, eagles, and other symbols of our country. For a fun, casual wedding, turn your reception into a Fourth of July barbecue. Party outside, grill favorites like hamburgers and hot dogs, and serve picnic foods like salads and seasonal favorites like corn on the cob. Add some outdoor games and fireworks for a party that can’t help but end with a bang!

Bold and Bright

One of the best parts of planning a summer wedding is that you don’t have to look too far for your color scheme. Just spend a little time in a garden, at a farmer’s market, or in a park, and you’ll be inundated by bright colors. Celebrate the season by making these colors your theme. Take your inspiration from the green of the grass, the red of the flowers, or the yellows of the squash. Pair with a neutral like brown – especially hot with pink or bright green – and you have a color combination you can use everywhere from invitations to bouquets to decorations to attire. Get inspiration at MarthaStewart.com to see how others have used bold colors to great effect.

All Natural

Outdoorsy types who try to live green will find it easy to plan an all-natural wedding day. Use natural fabrics like cotton and linen, and allow attendants to wear whatever they’re comfortable in (especially if they already own it!). Make your day look like it was homemade: carry a loose bouquet of fresh-picked, local flowers, serve locally grown and in-season food, and go easy on decorations and accents that can’t be reused. Of course, you’ll host your wedding and reception outside! Parks, gardens, and private homes are perfect locations for couples looking to celebrate their love for each other and the environment.
